Doug Carey’s testicular cancer journey began with something many men might overlook—an unusual change he noticed during a routine self-exam. It wasn’t a distinct lump or pea-sized bump, but something different about his left testicle that stood out. After two weeks of uncertainty and self-checks, Doug’s left testicle grew significantly, and a noticeable mass developed. This prompted him to visit his doctor, and soon after, he received the life-altering diagnosis: testicular cancer.

Shock and Seeking Support
The news of his diagnosis was shocking, and Doug didn’t immediately know how to cope. Like many young men faced with this challenge, he turned to those closest to him. “One of the first things I did was reach out to my family and friends for support,” Doug recalls. However, the shock and fear also led him to unhealthy coping mechanisms, like using alcohol to sleep at night. Reflecting on that time, he recognizes it wasn’t the best choice but acknowledges the overwhelming uncertainty of that period in his life.
The Hardest Part: Adjusting to a New Normal
For Doug, the hardest part of his journey wasn’t just undergoing treatment but adjusting to life after cancer. A mechanic by trade, he found that he couldn’t return to his job due to the chemicals and exposure that were part of his work environment, especially after chemotherapy. “I had to take more time off and eventually found a management role that suited my new reality,” Doug explains. The transition was difficult, but it opened new doors and allowed him to adapt while finding a new sense of purpose.
A Shift in Perspective
Going through cancer transformed Doug’s perspective on life. He realized just how precious and short life is. “Cancer made me see that most problems are trivial in the grand scheme of things,” he shares. The experience also reawakened his passion for giving back, motivating him to dive deeper into philanthropy and helping others facing similar challenges.
The Importance of Mental Health
Doug’s advice to those newly diagnosed is to seek help, particularly for mental health. “The physical part is actually the easy part,” he says. “The mental game and what comes after cancer is a much harder struggle.” Doug encourages others not to be afraid to ask for help and to accept support from those around them. His journey taught him the importance of mental well-being in the recovery process.
Finding a Lifeline in TCF
Early in his recovery, Doug connected with the Testicular Cancer Foundation (TCF) through another local support group. He became part of TCF’s inaugural Speakers Bureau, which launched him into a larger world of young adult cancer survivor communities. “TCF was a springboard that connected me with other survivor groups and gave me a platform to give back,” Doug says. His involvement with TCF has continued over the years, allowing him to make a meaningful impact in the lives of fellow survivors.
The Power of TCF Resources
Doug has utilized various TCF resources throughout his journey. He’s distributed shower cards on school campuses, handed out wallet cards at speaking events, and used wristbands to spread awareness in public spaces. For Doug, the Cojone Club—a group for testicular cancer survivors—has been particularly special. “It makes us all feel like we are part of a brotherhood,” he shares.
Building Lifelong Connections
Through TCF, Doug has found lifelong friends. He speaks fondly of the summits, speaker bureaus, and weekly Zoom calls that have helped him build deep connections. “These gentlemen are always there for me, and I know I can count on them for anything,” Doug says. The support and camaraderie he’s found in the TCF community have been instrumental in his recovery and personal growth.
Raising Awareness and Advocating for Change
TCF has inspired Doug to raise awareness and advocate for the importance of early detection and monthly self-exams. He’s shared his story at fundraising events, spoken to students at his former high school, and visited hospitals to educate healthcare professionals about testicular cancer. “I’ve made it my personal goal to give back to young adult cancer survivors and raise awareness about this disease,” Doug explains. His passion for advocacy continues to drive him to make a difference in his community.
The TCF Community: A Second Family
For Doug, being part of TCF feels like being part of an extended family. “Whenever I’m around other members of the TCF community, I feel at home,” he says. The support and understanding from his fellow survivors have given him the strength to live every day with purpose. Knowing that others out there need his help has been a powerful motivator in his life.
Looking Ahead: Expanding TCF’s Reach
As Doug looks to the future, he sees TCF continuing to grow and make a difference in the lives of survivors like him. He believes in expanding TCF’s reach and creating an even more inclusive community. Doug remains dedicated to supporting the foundation’s mission and helping other survivors navigate their own journeys.
Doug Carey’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, community, and giving back. Through TCF, he found not only the support he needed but also a new purpose in life—one focused on helping others and raising awareness for testicular cancer.
